Production and Perception of Contrast in German
نویسندگان
چکیده
In German intonational phonology two different approaches to model nuclear falling accents exist (cf. [6, 8] vs. GToBI [11]). While [6] and [8] assume only left-headed pitch accents, the GToBI system allows for leftand right headedness. Consequently, in the former approach one simple falling accent (H*L) is represented in the tonal grammar while GToBI distinguishes between two falling accents, a simple falling and a rising-falling one (H* Land L+H* L-). The present production and perception studies aim at providing phonetically based evidence in order to argue for one of the two phonological approaches of representing falling accents in German.

Perception and production of vowel contrasts in German learners of English
This paper discusses the relationship between the perception and the production of vowel contrasts in German learners of English. The underlying study investigates whether German subjects’ ability to distinguish between the English front vowels /e/ and /æ/ on the level of production improved after training only perception. The main hypothesis was that perception training would improve productio...

On the Role of Temporal Variability in the Acquisition of the German Vowel Length Contrast
This study is part of a larger project investigating the acquisition of stable vowel-plus-consonant timing patterns needed to convey the phonemic vowel length and the voicing contrast in German. The research is motivated by findings showing greater temporal variability in children until the age of 12. The specific aims of the current study were to test (1) whether temporal variability in the pr...
متن کاملPerception and Production of Mandarin Tones by German Speakers
This study investigates the possible errors related to Mandarin tone perception and production by German speakers. In a preliminary test, 23 German listeners should identify the tones of 186 monosyllables. Results show that exposure to Mandarin Chinese can help to discriminate lexical tones as highly expected. In the main experiment, 17 German subjects were asked to take part in a perception an...
متن کاملVowel Perception and Production of Late Turkish Learners of L2 German
The objective of this study was to test whether quantity and/or quality distinctions are problematic for Turkish learners acquiring L2 German. The perception and production of the German long/short vowel pairs /i:/-//, /a:/-/a/, and /u:/-// by a group of Turkish high school learners of L2 German were compared to an age-matched control group of German native speakers. The results of both the p...
